Niger

At the moment, Niger only seems to be talked about because of its complex political situation, its rich uranium deposits and the traffickers who use its ancient caravan routes. Yet this is one of the continent’s most hospitable and genuine countries, dominated by the Sahara Desert. A fascinating sea of sand and at the same time a feared adversary, which advances inexorably every year, making the daily lives of the resilient people who inhabit these territories increasingly harsh.

Stroll through the sandy streets of the mythical Agadez, once the most important Tuareg city on the trans-Saharan trade route. Stop in the shadow of its banked mosque, whose minaret has always been the city’s emblem, a beacon for those arriving from the sandy ocean and the arrival and departure point for caravans and the great Saharan expeditions. Spot the last surviving herd of wild giraffes in West Africa in the Kourè area and observe buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, lions and elephants in the Parc Regional du W, an extraordinary nature reserve that owes its curious name to the shape of the Niger River as it flows through its territory.

Catch the last glimpses of the age-old traditions of peoples still devoted to nomadism, and finally, take part in the great Gerewol festival of the nomadic Bororo shepherds, a spectacular event of great ethnographic interest that has preserved its spontaneous and involving character.
