Wedged in the tangle of West African borders, Togo is often overlooked by tourism maps. Yet its territory, which stretches from the Gulf of Guinea to the arid savannas of the Sahel, contemplates a variety of landscapes and cultures of great interest, as well as some of the most popular and colorful markets in the continent.
In Togo, each community has its own market, which once a week comes alive, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds, who gather not only to do business, but also and above all to participate to the social life of the country. They can be found for all tastes and they represent the essence of African culture. In the small and chaotic markets of the northern animist regions, Peulh women sell freshly milked milk and fresh fodder, while the old Tamberma sorcerers read the future on the sand. The Friday market in Vogan is perhaps the most impressive. Here Fon and Ewe, mostly Christians and followers of voodoo, come to exchange colorful fabrics, spices, cattle and medicinal plants. But the most particular is certainly that of Lome, where there are teeth, legs, animal horns, monkey skulls and all the ingredients necessary for the preparation of miraculous potions and powerful talismans.
