A real expedition into the desolated lands of the Dancala Depression and Djibouti, past sunny beaches, lunar landscapes, fiery salt flats, rugged plains with volcanic peaks of solidified lava and caravans of dromedaries, all the way to seductive Harar, the holy city of Islam and epicentre of the qat trade.

The scorching temperatures and the lack of services make these fascinating lands a destination for travellers who are prepared and have a great spirit of adaptation. But the emotions one feels in the presence of so many wonders of nature amply compensate for the hardships of the journey. These are unique places in the world, Dantean scenery and surreal landscapes of dazzling colours, dotted with geysers, limestone fumaroles and salt pans. And finally, the fascinating city of Harar, with its city walls, narrow coffee-scented alleyways, numerous mosques and colourful spice markets.

Italy/Addis Ababa

Day 2 :

Addis Ababa/Flight/Mekele

The capital of the Tigray region and its monument to the martyrs.

Day 3 :

Mekele/Amedila

Transfer to the depression of Dancalia and meeting with the Afar nomads.

Day 4 :

Amedila/Dallol/Amedila

The sulphurous formations of Dallol and camels laden with salt slabs on Lake Asale.

Day 5 :

Amedila/Dodem/Erta Ale

Trekking on the Erta Ale volcano to admire its lava lake at night.

Day 6 :

Erta Ale/Dodem/Afdera

The salt lake of Afdera, where the Afar people extract the precious mineral.

Day 7 :

Afera/Galafi/Dikhil/Lake Abbé

Lake Abbé, a surreal mirage with its limestone chimneys.

Day 8 :

Lake Abbé/Lake Assal/Ghoubbet

At -155 m above sea level, discover the turquoise Lake Assal and the Afar salt flats.

Day 9 :

Ghoubbet/Plage de Sables Blancs/Tadjoura

The Dante-like landscapes of Ghoubbet, an incredible volcanic site, and the “white sand beach”.

Tadjoura/Djibouti

The arabesque charm of Tadjourae in Djibouti.

Day 11 :

Djibouti/Gelille/Dire Dawa/Awodai/Harar

The qat market in Awodai, an incessant and frenetic hustle and bustle, the “green gold” market in the Horn of Africa.

Day 12 :

Harar

The fortified city of Harar, its gates, its colourful markets, the “hyena men”.

Day 13 :

Harar/Dire Dawa/Flight/Addis Ababa

The chaotic Merkato of Addis Ababa and tasting of Ethiopian cuisine.

Day 14 :

Addis Ababa/Italy
