Accommodation in Benin is difficult to classify by category. There are all types and for all budgets. They range from luxury hotels in the capital (though not comparable to European luxury standards), equipped with all amenities and with a swimming pool, to locally run guesthouses, to small charming hotels (particularly in the south) with adjoining art boutiques, which can be more or less comfortable and more or less expensive; or community auberges and campements or eco lodges, spartan and basic in some rural areas of the north, but which, in the absence of more comfortable alternatives, still offer the peace and quiet of the natural environment in which they are set and the warmth and welcome of community management, which will also allow genuine contact with the local population.
