Tunisia

Overlooking the Mediterranean and stretching towards the Sahara, Tunisia offers, in a relatively small territory, an extremely varied panorama and an extraordinarily rich historical, artistic and cultural heritage. It was a rich and influential Roman province, heir to Carthage, a crossroads in the Mediterranean, a flourishing Arab emirate and the heart of the vast Maghrebi kingdom of the Hafsids.

A meeting point for many civilisations, Tunisia has a history stretching back thousands of years, of which exceptional evidence has been preserved. There are archaeological sites of great interest, imperial vestiges and splendidly preserved ancient monuments, such as the Phoenician city of Carthage and the Roman city of Sbeitla, or the spectacular amphitheatre of El Jem, built in 230 A.D. on the model of the Coliseum. There is also exuberant nature, coastal villages with a gentle, relaxed atmosphere, medinas that are among the best preserved in the Arab world, imposing mosques, majestic ribats, places of worship and at the same time powerful military fortifications, and the driest areas of the interior, which open the way to the desert and the traditions of the Berber populations.

But if you want to immerse yourself in the everyday life of this lively and welcoming country, don’t miss a stroll through the alleyways of the characteristic souks, where spices, perfumes, metal or finely inlaid wooden handicrafts, colourful ceramics, beautifully crafted carpets and enamelled terracotta utensils are a feast for the eyes!
