The Adrar region is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating destinations in Mauritania. To get to know the true Saharan essence, the Adrar is a must-see. Perfectly sculpted sand dunes alternate with rocky landscapes, small green oases of palm trees and ancient caravan towns such as Chinguetti and Ouadâne.
Atâr is the capital, a caravan crossroads that was once the capital of the Adrar emirate and is now the most important commercial centre in the north. Atâr is famous for its craft shops, palm groves and excellent dates. The city is the ideal starting point for numerous circuits that touch on the main historical cities and the most interesting sights in Mauritania. Starting from Erg Amatlich, one of the most scenic ergs in the country, where the desert, with the imposing dunes of Aouja, alternates with characteristic villages where the few inhabitants are dedicated to sheep farming and date production.
Or Terjît, one of the most beautiful oases, located about 40 km south of Atâr, surrounded by rows of palm trees and splendid red rock formations that narrow towards a green area bathed by two springs. Hot water flows from one, and cold water from the other, which mixed together in the natural basin that forms at their feet are ideal for a regenerating bath. Finally, Tanouchert, a green oasis in the heart of the desert, a palm grove that comes alive especially during the guetna season, the date harvest.
