60 km north of Saint-Louis is the Djoudj National Bird Park, which covers an area of 16,000 hectares and is considered one of the most important sanctuaries in the world for watching migratory birds from Europe.
This earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981, and even the least ornithological enthusiast will find the spectacle of whole colonies of flamingos, pelicans, herons, ibises and hermit crabs, surrounded by an extraordinary landscape, unmissable.
Of the three million birds that pass through here each year, some 400 different species have been identified. The best time for birdwatching is from December to January and the best excursions are by traditional pirogue.
The park is also home to numerous warthogs, snakes, crocodiles, mongooses, gazelles, monkeys, jackals and hyenas, place for a transition area between the mainland and the waters of the Senegal River.
