In the common imagination, voodoo is associated with black magic, spells, occult and evil powers. In reality it is an extraordinarily rich and complex religion, endowed with a deep body of moral and social doctrines and an articulated cosmology. In Benin it is recognized as an official religion and is organized in a church to which 80% of the population belongs.
From the Beninese coasts, an ideal destination to relax but also to reflect on the history of the country and the tragic era of slavery, we will continue towards the heart of the ancient and powerful kingdom of Dahomey, cradle of voodoo. Here we will attend the first suggestive ceremonies that will then accompany us for the duration of the journey, including ancient liturgies, dancing spirits, trials of fire and ritual sacrifices. In the north of the two countries, we will meet traditional healers and visit villages designed as tiny clay defensive fortresses, where fetishes and amulets keep evil spirits away from the hearth. Magical and engaging atmospheres and then resuming the way of the coast, going into the dugout in suggestive lake villages and walking the sadly known “route des esclaves”, to the door of no return.
