The northwestern region of Cameroon is among the most interesting from a cultural and ethnographic point of view and is made up of a small mosaic of peoples, each with their own traditions.
Historically part of the former British Colony, it was annexed to the French-speaking territory of Yaoundé after Independence. This new geography fueled vigorous separatist sentiments over the years, up to the self-proclamation of Ambazonia country.
The whole region is scattered with chefferies, or centers of traditional power, depositaries of ancient hierarchies guarantors of the community order, both spiritually and administratively.
