Lalibela is the spiritual capital of Ethiopia and the beating heart of the Coptic faith in Africa. With its historic rock-hewn churches, age-old treasures and mystical atmosphere, it has earned a place of honour as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in the Middle Ages and considered to be the new ‘Jerusalem of Africa’, this charming town boasts one of the most impressive architectural heritages. An extraordinary unicum consisting of eleven rock-hewn churches decorated with ornamental crosses, whose constructive perfection has fuelled legends according to which “celestial workers” were involved in their construction. It is also said that one of them hides the Ark of the Covenant containing the tablets of the law, given by God to Moses. A place permeated by an enveloping sacredness, which becomes even more evocative during the religious ceremonies, which attract believers and pilgrims from all over the country and the priests wear their most precious vestments.
