A journey that retraces the trade routes of qat, the powerful natural amphetamine chewed throughout the Horn of Africa as a source of inspiration, social glue and “mind-cleanser”. This more or less licit trade radiates from the fascinating Harar, the “forbidden city” with its picturesque alleyways scented with coffee and spices, and crosses green valleys, sulphurous deserts, salt lakes and rugged volcanic ridges to reach the spectacular coast of Djibouti.
In the eastern highlands, there is an ancient legend that qat was born from a drop of the elixir of life. Chewing these miraculous leaves is part of the tradition and is a custom throughout the region. Following its trade routes, we will visit the beautiful Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most surprising cities, with its fortified walls, numerous mosques and lively markets, until we reach Djibouti, a small country with a wide variety of environments, including verdant slopes, hard-to-forget moonscapes and white beaches with unspoilt seabed.

The qat market of Awodai, a frenetic and incessant bustle, the “green gold” sorting point in the Horn of Africa.
Day 3:
Harar
The fortified city of Harar, its gates, its colourful markets, the “hyena men”.
Day 4:
Harar/Dire Dawa/Flight/Djibouti
On the streets of the capital with its colonial charm.
Day 5:
Djibouti/Petit Barra and Grand Barra/Lake Abbé
Across the desert to Lake Abbé, a surreal mirage with its limestone chimneys.
Day 6:
Lake Abbé/Lake Assal/Ghoubbet
At -155 m above sea level, discover the turquoise Lake Assal and the Afar salt flats.
Day 7:
Ghoubbet/Foresta du Day/Tadjoura
The Dante-like landscapes of Ghoubbet, an incredible volcanic site, and the verdant Goda mountains.
Day 8:
Tadjoura/Plage de Sables Blancs/Tadjoura
The “white sand beach” and the incredible seabed of the Red Sea, ideal for snorkelling.
Day 9:
Tadjoura/Djibouti
The Arabian charm of Tadjoura: whitewashed houses, palm trees and numerous mosques.
Day 10:
Djibouti/Italy
Arrival at the destination airport.
