Processions, dances, solemn ceremonies and precious glass bead necklaces to celebrate an ancient rite whose solemnity endures to our days: the Dipo. An important initiation ceremony marking the transition to adulthood for the young Krobo girls.
Every year in spring, dozens of Krobo girls gather in Odumase for a five-day event, punctuated by singing, dancing and practical exercises in home and family management. An increasing of emotional intensity, up to the solemn ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, which conclude the ritual and decree the emancipation of the young women. Dipo is not only a school of life, but also an opportunity for families to flaunt their wealth by adorning the girls’ bodies with hundreds of scenic strands of glass beads, a precious commodity handed down from generation to generation.
We will also participate in the Akwasidae of the Ashanti, which historically perpetuates the people’s veneration of their king.
The celebration, which takes place every 42 days in Kumasi, is certainly among the most opulent, participatory and enthralling events one can witness in West Africa. A riot of colourful fabrics, heavy gold jewellery, large multicoloured umbrellas and drums punctuate the solemn procession of dignitaries and political and diplomatic representatives. A pompous parade between the festive and the solemn in which all Ashanti are called to take part to pay homage to the powerful ruler Osei Tutu II and the entire royal family.
