In the south of the country, the island of Djerba, in the Gulf of Gabes, is an offshoot of Tunisia with a history of its own, rooted in myth, when Ulysses landed on its shores and found a happy population of lotus eaters, as Homer recounts in the Odyssey.

What is certain is that over the centuries this rocky plateau, 28 km long and 26 km wide, has been inhabited by Jews fleeing from Jerusalem, Babylonians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese and Turks. This complex history has made Djerba a colourful melting pot of peoples and traditions, with strong Berber and Islamic Karegite influences. These influences have influenced the architectural style in particular, with white mosques adorned with domes, turquoise portals standing out against the white walls of the houses and the inevitable souks, where spices, carpets and colourful terracotta are to be found. Not just beach tourism, then, but much more in this splendid island with a legendary past.
